SJ McDonald Releases New Single ‘Hot Damn’
The BCMA has teamed up with national promoter MAM Roots to spotlight a new release from an upcoming artist each week. We’re excited to announce that our Country Release Friday artist this week is SJ McDonald. Her new single ‘Hot Damn’ is available now to buy or stream on all major platforms and you can catch a live performance of the single on @mam_roots IGTV from 2pm today.
About the single SJ told us,
“‘Hot Damn’ was a defining moment for me as a songwriter. It was one of those songs where I finally said exactly whats on my mind! I wrote it in February of 2018 with Autumn Marie Buysse in a Belmont University writers room. (I was a freshman then, I just started my senior year last week!) The night before we wrote it, I had played a show on Lower Broadway, where afterwards I was sitting at the bar and a completely drunk guy came up, smacked me on the arm and said “damn girl!”. I was talking to Autumn about how that happens so much to women and she said, well, let’s write a song about it!
‘Hot Damn’ is a power anthem that is like someone demanding respect! I hope that this song empowers everyone, male or female, to feel like a badass and own it, and to not be afraid to stand up for themselves. I recorded this song with Brandon Meagher in Nashville, TN, and it’s like Brandon knew exactly what was in my head for the sound and production of this. He played drums on it, sang on it, and produced the whole damn thing. Y’all better watch out for him! The cover art was done by my best friend Willow Johnson, an insanely talented graphic designer, and the photo was taken by Mackenzie Baker, an equally amazing person as she is a photographer. Lastly, I have to give a shout out to my best friend and manager Caroline Hodson, who is crucial in helping me not mess this entire thing up! I am so proud of this song and the team surrounding it, and I am so grateful to yall at BCMA for featuring it. Go check out ‘Hot Damn’ y’all!”

Modern country music with a southern kick, SJ McDonald’s music reflects that of a hard working farmer’s daughter who takes no bull, and doesn’t sugarcoat. Raised on a small-town turkey & cattle farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and the oldest of her four siblings, SJ McDonald has a foundation of Country Music that comes honest and true. She started writing songs at 9 years old, and by 14 was touring with a full band named “SaraJane McDonald and SweetFIRE”. From the age of 14-18 she and SweetFIRE played throughout Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina opening for artists like Jon Pardi and Runaway June, and headlining their own shows.
In 2017 SJ moved to Nashville, TN and within a week was playing weekly shows in the historic bars of Lower Broadway while studying Songwriting at Belmont University. SJ was honored with the 2018 John Lennon Scholarship for Songwriters, as well as became a member of the “Song Suffragettes”, a writers round that highlights and empowers female songwriters in Nashville. In 2019 SJ went to Hollywood Week on Season 2 of American Idol. Now, she is grabbing the bull by the horns and releasing music independently. When she isn’t writing songs or playing them, she can be found working cattle in her family farm or dancing in the crowd of a honky tonk.
