Yorkshire Country Artist Sam Turner Releases New Single ‘God’s Own Country’
Following the success of his award winning debut single, ‘The Little Things in Life’, UK Country artist Sam Turner has released his follow-up single ‘God’s Own Country’ and it’s our Country Release Friday pick with MAM Roots this week. The song celebrates the achievements of Yorkshire and is available on all music platforms. Be sure to tune into @mam_roots IGTV from 6pm today for an exclusive video.
Talking about the single Sam explained, “‘God’s Own Country’ is a song about where I grew up. When I was younger I always wanted to move away to some big music city – London, Nashville etc, but I’ve realised that we’ve got it all here in Yorkshire anyway! I thought Yorkshire needed it’s own version of ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ or ‘Rock Mountain High’, and so ‘God’s Own Country’ was written.”
Sam Turner used to think country music was all about blue jeans and pickup trucks.
It’s understandable for a Yorkshireman, living over 4000 miles away from Nashville, not to have fully understood the genre. It wasn’t until studying at the ACM in Guildford, when a friend introduced him to Brad Paisley’s music, that Sam really began to appreciate the storytelling that makes country music so compelling.
Fascinated with the genre, and soon discovering incredible country artists in the UK such as The Shires and Ward Thomas, Sam spent the following years writing personal, story based songs, blending in his pop background to create his modern country-pop crossover sound.
After graduating and returning to his hometown, Sam has played a number of gigs and festivals including Galtres Festival and Humber Street Sesh.
Sam Turner’s debut single ‘The Little Things In Life’ was released in October 2020, and was soon after selected as the winner of the UK Songwriting Contest ‘Crisis’ category.
Sam’s second single ‘God’s own Country’ is due to be released 2nd April 2021.
