The new single from Stoke-on-Trent country band Chasing Twisters brings the atmosphere of a summer evening by the creek in Tennessee all the way to the UK. An uptempo, feel-good party-by-the-lake track, it blends Country and Latin rhythms, featuring catchy lead guitar riffs and a solo inspired by the Florida sound of 38 Special balanced by a swampy Bossa Nova rhythm through the verse.
Songwriter Craig Chapman realised that we are at a slight disadvantage writing authentic country songs here in the UK to that of our friends across the Atlantic. Simply getting up and “driving your truck to Tuscaloosa” is already the opening of a country song, whilst our equivalent “reverse parking my hybrid in Chipping Sudbury” requires a bit more imagination! “Skinny Dip Creek” was one of Craig’s first attempts at country song-writing, written back in 2016 with former band-mate Dawn Jaques, inspired by country hits from Nashville depicting trucks with dropped tailgates, cooking food on a camp fire, and having fun down by the creek. Putting these American country key words together like a jigsaw, they turned it into a story and set it to a chord sequence Sugarland would be proud of!
“Being the first country song I really set out to write, the lyrics really are a jigsaw of modern country song lyrics (isn’t most of Nashville?), while the Middle 8 break down, with it’s drawled Johnny-Cash-style rap always catches first listeners by surprise, before we burst into the solo.” – Craig Chapman, songwriter, lead guitarist and vocalist.
Laura teases the story-telling lead vocals, whilst Craig adds a lazy drawled rap and the melodic guitar solo inspired by 38 Special’s Jeff Carlisi, followed by a stripped back clap-along chorus driven by the drums. The song opens the band’s debut album “Better In A Hat,” and has featured at every live show cheekily introduced as being “about taking off your clothes and jumping in some water.”
The band kicked off their 2026 festival season with two performances at Nantwich Jazz and Blues Festival over Easter weekend, the second hosted and recorded by BBC Introducing for a “Live In Session” show which will be broadcast on 7th and 9th May on BBC Stoke, Shropshire, Hereford and Worcester. The band have now had 4 songs played by the BBC initiative to showcase new local acts, chosen from over a million submissions. The 17th April release date for “Skinny Dip Creek” coincides with a main stage performance at award-winning UK country festival Country On The Coast Festival in Portsmouth. The single is accompanied by an official video filmed at Tubb Studios in Coalville.
